Truck Stops Offer Health Care For Big Rig Drivers

Knoxville, Tenn. (AP) -- The first of a planned chain of "medical depots" or clinics for truck drivers is now open at the Petro Stopping Center Truck Stop near Knoxville.

The clinic is near the intersection of two busy interstates, I-40 and I-75. Others are under construction in West Memphis, Arkansas; Atlanta; North Carolina and Illinois.

The clinics provide Department of Transportation physicals, drug screenings, breath-alcohol testing, flu shots, pneumonia vaccines and treatment for work-related injuries and personal illness.

Knoxville-based PDMD plans to set up 60 to 80 medical depots by 2010 across the country.

The company is also establishing a professional drivers medical group to give drivers access to affiliated hospitals near each depot.
