Student Critical After Being Hit Waiting for School Bus

Knoxville (WVLT) - A carter middle school student was hit by a car this morning trying to cross the highway to get to his bus stop.

The bus stop where 11-year-old Tyler Fawver was headed Tuesday morning, sits on the opposite side of four lanes of Rutledge Pike.

Tyler was flown by LifeStar to UT hospital and is in critical condition. A family friend tells WVLT he's on a ventilator and suffering two broken legs, one broken arm, bruised lung and bruised rib.

The Knox County Sheriffs Department says Tyler and three of his friends ran across Rutledge Pike to get to their bus stop and Tyler stopped in front of a Honda Accord when he was hit.

"I saw him go up in the air and come back down and when I saw he wasn't moving I started crying because he's one of my friends," says D.J. Lusk.

"The first thing I noticed was the backpack rolling down the road and then the car stopped up here with him laying beside the car," recalls Jennifer Moore, who ran to the aid of the injured student.

Unfortunately, Tyler was unresponsive. Family friend tells WVLT his condition has not improved.

The sheriffs department says that no charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the car.
