State Officials Say Overhaul Of Guard Won't Affect Call-Up Status

Chattanooga (AP) -- Tennessee National Guard officials say overhauling the guard into units that are more mobile won't mean Tennessee Guard members will be more readily called to active duty.

State military officials say about 75 percent of Tennessee Guard soldiers have been affected by the ongoing changes. The revamp was started last year in an effort to modernize the military nationwide.

Tennessee National Guard spokesman Randy Harris told the Chattanooga Times Free Press the overhaul creates what Harris calls a "plug and play" situation. He explains that if a specific unit is required, it can be pulled from its usual duty and plugged in where it's needed.

Harris says the state guard was last reorganized in 1995, but now military officials want modular units that can be quickly deployed when needed.
