Recording Industry to Offer Settlements to Hundreds of College Students

Los Angeles (AP) -- About 400 college kids will soon have to make a decision. They can take a deal to settle music piracy charges, or they can gamble on going to court.

They're going to be offered discounted settlements for allegedly swapping music online. Otherwise, they'll be sued for copyright infringement.

Students at 13 universities will be getting letters from the Recording Industry Association of America, which says this is just the start. The industry group plans to send hundreds more such letters each month. Association officials say music theft remains a big problem, especially on college campuses.
