Howard Baker: Fred Thompson for President

Knoxville (WVLT) - In a telephone conversation with WVLT Volunteer TV News Friday afternoon, Former Tennessee U.S. Senator Howard Baker confirmed that he is urging his fellow former Senator and long time friend Fred Thompson to run for President.

Baker is the latest in a long list of GOP hierarchy nationwide who have come out in favor of Thompson, who is as well known nationally for his role as movie star and his roles in TV entertainment series as he is his political endeavors.

Baker’s dealings with Thompson go back to 1973 when then-Congressman Baker was serving on the panel investigating the Watergate scandal. Baker, an attorney himself by trade, had appointed Thompson as a special counsel to the Watergate panel.

The 64-year-old Thompson is a native of Alabama but grew up in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee and has spent most of his “non-Hollywood” days in either Tennessee or Washington D.C. Thompson got his law degree from Vanderbilt. Thompson was a Republican senator from Tennessee for eight years through 2002.

Baker told the Knoxville News Sentinel that his wife, former Kansas Senator Nancy Kassebaum is supporting Senator John McCain for President and that should Thompson not run, he is leaning toward McCain as his pick for the Republican nomination.
