Naifeh Gets Testy Over Competition

Nashville (AP) -- Democratic House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh got mad. Then he canceled his weekly news conference.

Naifeh wasn't happy that reporters chose to attend an earlier news conference by Republican Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey. Naifeh told reporters he's been having his availabilities for 16 years and now don't come. So he said "so I'm not having it this week."

The Senate speaker's chief of staff says there was an agreement that whoever finished up session first would hold the first news conference. Naifeh has been House Speaker since 1991 and says he had not heard of such a deal.

Former Senate Speaker John Wilder rarely held news conferences during his more than three decades as speaker.

Ramsey had more reporters than usual wanting to talk about Senator Mike Williams' decision to switch from Republican to independent.
