East TN Soldier Gets 10 Years

Fort Campbell, KY (AP) -- A Fort Campbell soldier from East Tennessee has been sentenced to ten years in prison in the deaths of three Iraqi detainees.

A military hearing panel at Fort Campbell sentenced Staff Sergeant Ray Girouard of Sweetwater late Monday afternoon.

He had been convicted Friday of negligent homicide in the deaths.

Earlier in the day, the 24-year-old soldier said he knows he made a mistake in lying about the killings.

Girouard said during the sentencing phase of his trial that there's a fine line between loyalty and truth.

Girouard was found guilty of three counts of negligent homicide. He was found not guilty of premeditated murder. He avoided life in prison, but still faced up to 21 years.

Girouard was accused of telling his soldiers to release detainees they captured during the May 9th raid near Samarra, Iraq, and then shoot them as they fled.
