Senate Signals Support For Withdrawing Troops From Iraq By Next March

Capitol Hill (AP) -- Senate Republicans have failed to scuttle a non-binding timeline for withdrawing US combat troops from Iraq.

Democrats defied a veto threat from President Bush as the senate narrowly passed a provision calling for American Combat Forces to leave Iraq by next March.

The attempt to remove the language from a spending bill fell short by a vote of 50-to-48. The vote was largely along party lines.

The roll call marked the Senate's most forceful challenge to date of the administration's handling of a war that has claimed the lives of more than 3200 US troops.
