Apartment Building Fire in Memphis Kills 3 Kids, 1 Adult, Injures 8 Others

Memphis (AP) -- Memphis fire officials say fire broke out in an apartment building before dawn Tuesday, killing four people and injuring eight others, most of them children.

The fire department says the four fatalities all occurred in the same apartment. The victims were a 40-year-old man, an eight-year-old girl and two boys, ages six and five.

Their names haven't yet been released, pending positive identification and notification of families.

Five other children were taken to Lebonheur Children's Medical Center and three other adults were taken to the Regional Medical Center.

Lieutenant Keith Staples said in a news release those injured suffered smoke inhalation and minor cuts and burns. None were critically hurt.

There was no early indication what started the fire in a two-story wood frame apartment house. It was report at 2:48 a.m. CDT and the first engines arrived four minutes later.

Some residents are reported to have jumped from balconies to escape the flames.

Several apartments were badly damaged in the fire.
