Knoxville (WVLT) -- Some Knoxvillians are trying to put the heat on congress about Global Warming.

Today they took another step toward doing just that as the "Step It Up" rally kicked off at the Tennessee Unitarian Universalist Chruch on Kingston Pike.

Chanting the campaigns name, these protesters spend the early afternoon urging congress to cut carbon emissions by 80 percent over the next 43 years.

Students, teachers, children and self-described experts on clean energy were present at what they called a "virtual march" on Washington D.C.

"There really hasn't been any kind of citizens movement to speak of," said Geoffrey Troubridge who attended the event. "You look at the civil rights movement in the 1960s, those people on the streets, they were like teenagers you know? Sometimes putting themselves in possible danger because they care about the issue. That hasn't happened really yet with this."

The "Step It Up" virtual march consists of a Website that people post pictures and encouraging messages on.
