Federal Officials Evaluate Site For Proposed Lab Amid Protest

Somerset, KY (AP) -- Federal inspectors have evaluated a South-Central Kentucky site that's been proposed as home for a national laboratory. The lab would develop vaccines against biological diseases.

The evaluation came as more than 50 people opposed to the proposed lab gathered near the Pulaski County site. Protesters shouted slogans and waved signs that read "No Kentucky Bio Lab." Federal inspectors drove by the protesters, but didn't meet with them.

Kentucky is one of several states competing for the lab. Other states include Texas, California, Kansas, Maryland, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
