Federal Judge Throws Out Confederate Flag Lawsuit

Knoxville (WVLT) - A lawsuit filed by a group of Blount County students over the right to wear a confederate flag will not be heard by a federal judge.

Defense attorney Van Irion tells WVLT Volunteer TV’s Blount Count Bureau Chief Stephen McLamb the lawsuit was thrown out by the judge Thursday afternoon.

Last year, a group of students from William Blount High School sued the school district after they were told they could not wear confederate symbols on their clothes.

Irion says he plans to immediately file an appeal with the US 6th Circuit Court in Cincinnati.

The issue was supposed to go to trial on June 5th in federal court.
