Knoxville (WVLT) -- A group of college students landed in East Tennessee Sunday evening, almost two years after mother nature nearly destroyed their home town.

Several students from New Orleans will spend the next week at Alex Haley's farm in Clinton, undergoing training to become interns for the Freedom School.

Freedom School is a nationwide program that encourages young black Americans to become involved in the lives of inner city children.

For at least one visitor , it' s a chance to have a positive impact in the life of a youngster.

"We have a very high poverty level, and a lot of people really don't have a lot too look forward to," said Cierra Tunson, a resident of New Orleans. "Its just a great opportunity to encourage children, show them something different and show them that they can succeed and go forward in life."

The students also will spend some time on the University of Tennessee's campus.
