Congressman Duncan Talks About Some Current Issues

Knoxville (WVLT) -- An East Tennessee's Congressman says he's not about to let low approval ratings for Congress in general, affect how he does his job.

A recent study shows Congress is suffering approval ratings that reaching into the the low 20's.

Some pundits say they're the result of failing to set a date certain for pulling our troops out of Iraq.

But Congressman Jimmy Duncan says low numbers, in and of themselves, are nothing new.

"I just try to work as hard as I can, and help as many people as I can," Congressman Duncan said. "Those ratings will never change. They were that low before I ever came to Congress and they will be that low many years after I leave the Congress."

Congressman Duncan also has some strong opinions about reason immigration legislation.

On Thursday a new immigration reform bill stalled, partly because of a plan to give illegal immigrants amnesty, and an easier pathway to citizenship.

Congressman Duncan disapproves of both.

"I'm not in favor of any bill that would increase immigration because already we are taking in many millions more than any other country in the world," Congressman Duncan said. "We are doing far more than our share and far more than we can handle. What we really need to do is enforce the laws that are already on the books."

Congressman Duncan says no other country in the world has as many people trying to get to its shores, or inside its borders as the United States does.
