Bishop Kurtz Will Miss East Tennessee

Powell (WVLT) -- The dedication of the new St. Mary's Medical Center North included a familiar face that will soon be leaving us.

Knoxville's Bishop, the Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz gave the blessing during the ceremony.

Two months ago he was named the new Archbishop of the Louisville Archdiocese.

Bishop Kurtz became the head of the Knoxville Diocese in 1999.

"I'm not looking forward to leaving the comfort of Knoxville, I love the people and I love the diocese," said Bishop Kurtz, "of course I love the opportunity to serve here."

Even though Bishop Kurtz leaves for Louisville later this month, he will still have a connection to the Knoxville Diocese.

That is because Knoxville is part of the Louisville Archdiocese which covers the states of Kentucky and Tennessee.

His successor in Knoxville has not been named.
