Tropical Storm Erin Declared in Gulf

MIAMI (AP) -- Rescue workers are gearing up in southern Texas as newly-formed Tropical Storm Erin barrels through the Gulf of Mexico.

The state, still drying off from a recent spate of flooding, is bracing for the heavy rains the storm is expected to bring.

Winds have gained speed and are now topping out at nearly 40 miles an hour.

The storm is still about 250 miles offshore. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Erin could hit land tomorrow.
