(Blount Co.) WVLT - Construction is now underway for a new $10 (M) million public safety building at Mcghee Tyson Airport.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held wednesday morning at the airport at the location of the new aircraft rescue and fire fighting facility.

Officials say it will have the latest technology available to security and firefighting staff which has grown over the years and will replace the current facility which was built more than 25 years ago.

Airport Board Chairman, Richard Keieg says, "In the event of an emergency, it is going to provide better facilities and better equipment for not only our safety officers but they are also security officers so the traveling public will know that when they fly in or out of Mcghee Tyson Airport in Knoxville that they are going to be extremely safe."

Officials say the new facility is expected to be complete in just under a year and a half.
