Cold case gets new evidence, family speaks out

Shannon Hercutt

SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- There is new information, and new hope, in an East Tennessee murder mystery.

The family of Shannon Hercutt says the Sevier County Sheriff recently told them there is new evidence in her murder and encouragement that the mystery surrounding Shannon's final moments can be solved.

However, Shannon's father Ted says Sheriff Ron Seals has not gone into detail about the new information.

Shannon Hercutt's body was found in her wrecked SUV in the summer of 2009. Her truck had plungged 150 feet off a Sevier County road, and landed in an area of thick brush.

At first, a Tennessee State Trooper ruled the death accidental. But a closer look revealed Shannon had trauma to the back of her head, causing investigators to rule the death as a homicide.

An ex-boyfriend with whom she was in a business deal is the main suspect of her family. Investigators have not named a suspect.
