KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- People all over the nation are making the pledge to stop trashing and start helping the environment Friday, November 14th for America Recycles Day.

John Homa from the City of Knoxville Solid Waste said, "It was started in 1997 by the National Recycling Collation and it's an awareness program to make folks more aware about recycling."

It's something that many are trying to do in the City of Knoxville through their 'Do Your Part With The Cart" curbside recycling program; however many are finding that recycling is easier said than done.

"My family has been on the waiting list for year," said Robert Nark, a Knoxville city resident, "We haven't heard anything from the city about expanding the program to more than 20,000 people and it's disappointing."

The Narks aren't the only ones on the list, in fact, there are thousands waiting to recycle in the city.

"We can only have 20,000 people enrolled in the program due to funding and we know it's something people really want to do because our waiting list is around 2,600 people," said Homa

When the free program was originally offered a grant paid for the 20,000 carts but that grant ran out and the city has to find more money to expand the program

"We have to wait for the right amount of funds to come in and get all that approved by the administration and council. We're working towards that but we do have a ways to go," said Homa

There is some good news though that might help encourage more people to recycle.

Homa said, "This winter we'll put another 300 carts on the street for the people on top of that list. We've had people leave the program so we do have a few hundred carts to redistribute."

Until then, people living in the city will have to take their recyclables to one of the five centers in the area.

"I think a lot of people would be much more enthusiastic about recycling if they could just do it on their curb as opposed to driving somewhere," said Nark
