Blount County deputy out of hospital after getting hit

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn (WVLT) -- The Sheriff's Department tells us the deputy injured Tuesday morning is James Patty.

He has been on the force for about six months.

He was rushed to the hospital after being hit by a car in Maryville.

Dispatchers tell us the deputy was working an accident along Highway 411 south near Brick Mill Road when he was hit.

He was taken to UT Medical Center for a knee injury and released a few hours later.

"This is a constant problem. We haven't had officers struck before, but we've had several very close calls," said Lieutenant Randy Ailey.

The driver that struck Patty was cited for violating the "move over" law.

"The move over law is there to protect any emergency workers, utility workers, tow trucks that are there on the roadway," said Ailey.

"Anytime that you see those flashing lights for an emergency vehicle just give them extra room. If you're able to get into the other lane that's perfect. If you're not, lower your speed," said TDOT's Mark Nagi.
