Boy Scouts and Young Marines honor veterans one flag at a time

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)- It's a labor of love. A way to say "thank you" to our veterans, just in time for Veterans Day.

More than 6 thousand flags were placed on veterans graves at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery Saturday morning.

It took less than two hours for members of the Boy Scouts, Young Marines, and their families to accomplish the task.

Rick Phillips started the tradition in 1990, after his veteran father was one of the first buried at the sacred site.

It's a tradition folks like David Joiner feels a strong connection to. Two of his sons have served, while his youngest son was one of the Young Marines planting the flags.

Sunday at two o'clock in the afternoon, a Veteran's Day ceremony will be held at the cemetery which is on Lyons View Pike.
