KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tuesday is the last day for Knox County residents to buy rain barrels and composting bins at deep discounts.
The Water Quality Forum is sponsoring the event, along with the City of Knoxville, Knox County government and the Town of Farragut.
The idea is to get more people to use the modern adaptation of an old idea — rain barrels to save water runoff from roofs. Capturing runoff water can reduce what the storm sewer system must handle in heavy downpours. It also gives homeowners water for their gardens at no cost.
The 50-gallon barrels are usually $119, but can be bought online through Tuesday for $58. The website is www.RainBarrelProgram.org/Water-Quality-Forum. The barrels can be picked up Saturday, June 15, at Chilhowee Park.
The composting bins are $62.
