Woman drives off retaining wall after getting car washed

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Cars normally drive through Arland Car Wash with no problems, so what happened Tuesday afternoon was a big surprise:

"Oh my Gosh! I was in shock, you know - I couldn't believe that she actually did that," said Dana White, a manager at Arland Car Wash.

Surveillance video shows driver Mildred Peters slowly driving her Nissan out of the car wash. But instead of turning right to exit, she drove right off the retaining wall.

"Everyone was just worried if she was okay or not. The fire department and everybody came and people from Verizon next door were going and asking her if she was okay," said White.

Including Greg Greene, who works at Verizon.

"I looked through the window and saw that the vehicle was flipped over, and immediately ran down. There was another pedestrian that had laid down in the broken glass and was holding her hand and talking to her and so I immediately called 911," said Greene.

Peters said she's fine and ended up with just a scratch on her arm. She said she was distracted and didn't see the sign alerting her to turn right when she drove out.

The car wash said something this serious is a first.

"It's happened where a tire went on the mulch there, but nothing where they went completely over like that," said White.

Workers said they've always had the sign reminding people to turn right when they leave, but now they might add other reminders, too.

"The sign, it works, but maybe we're going to have to put some cautionary cones or something - you know, we don't want that to happen again. We don't want to see anybody get hurt," White said.
