Donate blood for World Donor Day

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- It doesn't cost a dime and it only takes a little of your time but its effects are live saving; that's why donating blood is so important.

Even with all the medical advancements we have today; there's still no replacement for blood. That's why donating blood is so important in order to keep supplies stocked in local hospitals. But have you ever wondered who does this blood really help?

It helps people like April Bryan; a woman who developed a very rare blood disorder called Disseminated intravascular coagulation or D.I.C for short.

April explained "My body started producing blood thinner on it's own. My blood became so thin that I started bleeding internally and by the time I realized what was going on I pretty much lost all my blood."

She was rushed to UT Medical Center and into emergency surgery where doctors were unsure if she would survive.

"I ended up getting 12 units of blood and spent a couple of weeks in the hospital several days in the ICU." said April

She's says she's alive today thanks to 12 selfless people who gave blood.

Harry Bryan, April's wife always makes it a point to donate blood even though he doesn't like needles.

He said "There is no substitute for blood you have to have it. No blood means no life and because of donors I still have the love of my life."

The Bryan's share their story whenever they can so more people will face their fears and donate blood.
