KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Police are investigating a shooting on Cumberland Avenue that left one person dead and five others injured Saturday around 3 a.m. in front of Studio X.

Investigators say 35-year-old Marquail Patterson is accused of killing 35-year-old Adairius Boatwright.

Officers say Marking Vaughn was shot in the back; Joshua Wilkerson was shot in the knee; Joseph Mobley was hit in the lower leg; Nancy Lawson suffered a shot to her foot; and Jamaal Smith was cut on the arm while trying to seek safety.

Rural-Metro says three victims were taken to U.T. Medical Center, and Boatwright was taken to Fort Sanders initially but died at U.T. during surgery.

With two shootings near in the same area in less than ten months, business owners tell Local 8 News the violence needs to stop.

Sandra Hobbs, general manager of Stefanos Chicago Style Pizz, says, "It didn't make me feel safe. I was immediately concerned for my staff. I looked to see what time it happened."

"What are my costumers going to think? We have families that come down here. Who wants to come down to place where you don't know what's going to happen?" asked Hobbs.

Nearby University of Tennessee students heard the gunshots.

Tucker Towe says, "I don't think that's what should be represented on the strip. This is a place for students to let loose from school. They shouldn't have to worry about this kind of stuff. "

Patterson is charged with one count of First Degree Murder and four counts of Attempted First Degree murder.
