Memorial held for Derek Funk three years after disappearance

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Dozens gathered at Faith Promise Church Sunday to remember Derek Funk on the third anniversary of the day he went missing.

Derek's father Kevin Funk spoke, reading from the Bible the words the family has relied on for strength.

"I believe we will see him one day when we get to Heaven," said Kevin.

Nearly fifty white balloons were released, bearing messages of hope and healing for Derek and his family.

"It just felt freeing for me. I wrote him a message... and it was just freeing," said Derek's mom Tricia Funk.

Funk was 19 when he went missing after leaving his girlfriend's house in Powell. He never arrived back home, and he didn't show up for work the next day.

At the time, police reported that Funk was thought to be severely depressed.

Now his parents say they have hope, but they've let go.

"I had to let it go, and I'm at peace with it. I know he's OK and God will bring him home one day," said Tricia.

The investigation remains ongoing. Funk's family is offering $10,000 for information about his whereabouts.
