Gibson homers as No. 2 Lady Vols crush Appy State, 9-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -Lauren Gibson hit a two-run homer, Raven Chavanne and Lexi Overstreet each had two RBIs and Cheyanne Tarango tossed a five-inning shutout as No. 2 Tennessee powered its way past Appalachian State, 9-0, in five frames on Tuesday at Lee Stadium.

Tennessee (39-6) extended its winning streak 16 games. UT scored one in the first inning, six in the second and two in the third while Tarango contained the Appalachian State (21-16) offense.

Gibson hit a sac fly to left in the first and a two-run homer to left in the second. Chavanne drove in two runs, drew two walks and scored twice. Overstreet hit a two RBI single and scored a run. Kat Dotson and Melissa Brown each had a hit and an RBI.

Tarango (6-1) struck out three over five shutout innings to earn her sixth win of the season. It was her fourth complete game on the year.

Shivaun Landeros (8-6) allowed seven earned runs over two innings to take the loss. Katherine Johnson allowed two earned runs over one relief inning. Alissa Schoelkopf threw a scoreless fourth.

In the bottom of the first with one out and Chavanne on third, Gibson knocked a sacrifice fly to left field to give UT a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Vols poured on six runs in the bottom of the second to take command of the game. After Tarango drew a leadoff walk and Melissa Davin followed with an infield single to short, Brown ripped an RBI double to center field. Overstreet followed with a two-run single to right field to push Tennessee's lead to 4-0. Three batters later, Dotson hit an RBI single up the middle. In the next at-bat, Gibson crushed the first pitch she saw from Landeros over the wall in left for a two-run blast. UT's lead grew to 7-0.

With two outs in the third, Chavanne connected for a two-RBI single up the middle to put the run rule into effect.

In the bottom of the fourth, freshman Anna Renfroe collected the first hit of her career on a single back to the pitcher.

Tennessee will take on Ole Miss for three games this Friday through Sunday in Oxford, Miss. UT will return to Rocky Top to face James Madison in a doubleheader on April 24.
