Human remains found in Cumberland Mountain State Park

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. – Human remains were found inside a state park in Cumberland County.

According to officials with the Cumberland County Assistant District Attorney's Office, the remains were discovered deep inside Cumberland Mountain State Park Saturday. They said a visitor at the park found the remains.

Gary McKenzie, Assistant District Attorney for Cumberland County said the bones could have been there for several months or perhaps years.

The remains were reportedly found to be scattered around the location, possibly due to the elements.

Investigators said an intact human skull was recovered and sent off to the medical examiner's office for identification. They said there was no apparent cause of death.

Officials said a backpack and clothes were also recovered from the scene. They said those items have been sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation crime lab for further analysis.

It is unclear how long it will take authorities to identify the remains.

Authorities said no missing persons case has been reported in the area.
