Kilgore introduced as Powell's new head football coach

POWELL, Tenn. (WVLT) -- In a very informal atmosphere, Tobi Kilgore was introduced as Powell High School's new football coach Tuesday night.

Players, parents, and other supporters of Panther football were at the school to meet and talk with their new coach.

Kilgore arrives at Powell after spending the last two seasons as Central's defensive coordinator.

He inherits a program that has won 37 games the last three seasons, making a deep playoff the last two.

"I think you have a dream situation (here)," Kilgore told Local 8 Sports.

"I think Powell High School is that dream situation. When you block off Emery Road to do a Panther Walk on a Friday night, and you're selling out that stadium, and you're running out underneath the stadium and Rocky Top is playing when you're scoring 30 plus points a game, that's a perfect situation for me. I'm just absolutely thrilled to be their football coach and to continue the success that's been here."

There's been no shortage of success.

In 2011, the Panthers made it to the state championship game. Last season, Powell saw the season end in the state semifinals.

Kilgore said he "won't reinvent the wheel."

He plans on keeping much of the same staff that was part of those Powell teams.

"I started meeting with them (assistant coaches) yesterday, some of them today. And I'll try to finish up tomorrow. I'll try to keep as much of that core group of guys that's won those 30 plus games."

"I gotta set of core values and a vision that I think will help us maintain that success and push that success further. Cause I didn't get hired to just continue to maintain."

Kilgore replaces Derek Rang. After just one season with the Panthers, Rang resigned last March after an investigation into an alleged test taking irregularities.

Prior to Rang, Matt Lowe coached the Panthers for six seasons. Lowe is now the head coach at Kings Academy.
