Passenger killed in Alcoa Highway wreck | UPDATE

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Police say one person is dead and another is in the hospital after a single-vehicle crash on Alcoa Highway near Ginn Road.

Officers say they found two people pinned inside the truck around 3:40 a.m. Saturday.

They say the pickup was going at a high rate of speed when the front tires went off the shoulder. The driver, Johnny Clowers Jr., of Powell, over-corrected causing the vehicle to spin. The truck went into a ditch, flipped, and hit a telephone pole.

Powell was cut out from the vehicle by the Knoxville Fire Department and taken to UT Medical Center. Police say he was not wearing a seat belt.

The passenger, Amanda Johnson, of Maryville, was pronounced dead. She was wearing a seat belt.

Officers say open alcohol containers and drug paraphernalia were found inside the truck.

Clowers was driving on a suspended license, charges are pending.
