People plunge into Tennessee River for a good cause

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's not something you expect to see in January-- people jumping into the Tennessee River.

People braved the brisk water for the first Penguin Plunge, which benefits the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of East Tennessee.

Kirk Finnerty, Chair of the Penguin Plunge, says it's a good way to raise money. "I've got a little brother that I've had for about a year now. I've seen what kind of effect this program has had on him. If ever there's a charity to give to that has an impact on kids, this would be it," he said.

Saturday's event raised more than 13,000 dollars.
