Police say man poured Johnny Walker on wife, tried to set her on fire

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) - A 62-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly attacking his wife with a knife, and then attempting to set her on fire after pouring alcohol on her.

Metropolitan Nashville Police arrested Stephen Russell early Thursday after his wife was treated at the hospital for a deep cut on her right hand.

A Davidson County affidavit said Russell's wife told police officers that they had gotten into an argument at their home on Wednesday night. After leaving the home to allow things to "cool off between them," the wife said she returned to the house to find Russell "even drunker than he was before she left home."

The victim said she was cut when Russell allegedly attacked her with a knife. The affidavit said she was able to fight him off, but she was cut on the hand.

Russell then allegedly threw Johnny Walker Scotch whisky all over her and tried to set her on fire. She was able to get away before his attempts were successful.

The affidavit said Russell's wife went to the hospital for treatment, and the responding officer prosecuted him on behalf of the victim due to her injuries.

Russell was booked into the Metropolitan Jail, where he remained Friday on $30,000 bond.
