Police search for robbers armed with handguns

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Police are on the hunt for two men armed with handguns.

The Knoxville Police Department says the men were wearing masks when they robbed three people near the UT campus.

It happened in the 2200 block of Laurel Avenue around 7:15 Wednesday night.

Police say two men and a woman were in the back of Town-Site Apartments building, when two masked men with guns crept along the side and tried to rob them.

Police say the robbers took the woman's purse, and she ran away.

The two men fought back against the suspects who were trying to steal their wallets.

Cops tell Local 8 News one got punched in the face before the masked men took off.

KPD says they're now searching for the suspects, and use this as a reminder to students to be careful, especially at night.

"Just be aware of your surroundings. Take your valuables and place them out of sight in your vehicles, or take them into your house with you. Just pay more attention to your surroundings," said Sgt. Shawn Neal with KPD.

As for the two suspects, police say one was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, and the other a black hooded sweatshirt, and he was the one who had the gun.

The man who was punched in the face was treated at the scene, police say he'll be okay.

As for the woman whose purse was stolen, cops are still trying to find her.
