Possible water contamination forces Maryville apartments to evacuate

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Residents of one Maryville apartment complex were evacuated Wednesday due to health concerns with the water system.

Water department officials were called to inspect the water and sewer system on Tuesday at Foothills Crossing apartments on Whitecrest Drive in Maryville.

Officials found a surface water and probable waste-water contamination threat to the apartments' water source as well as the City's water system. This condition posed an immediate health hazard to apartment residents.

"The inspection revealed a cross-connection hazard which could result in contamination of both the City water system and the apartments' water service. We had to cut off water to the complex until the owner can install a backflow off prior to the rains forecasted for Thursday," said Public Utility Director Baron Swafford in a news release.

The apartment owner is responsible for hiring a contractor to do the work. According to officials, the project should take two days to complete.

The Red Cross is helping the residents displaced from the apartments.
