GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) -- The Appalachian Trail isn't the only challenging footpath to run through the Smokies.

A two-hour hike on the first section of the Mountains to Sea Trail will be held Saturday, May 4.

Beginning at 10 a.m. EDT, author and Great Smoky Mountains Association board member Danny Bernstein will guide participants on a 4.4-mile hike from the Mingus Mill parking lot, near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. At 1 p.m., on the visitor center back porch, Bernstein will talk about her hike of the 1,000-mile trail that stretches from Clingmans Dome in the Smokies to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Hikers should wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring drinking water and rain gear.
