GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Ober Gatlinburg has done something they've not done in a long time, been able to open ski slopes to the top of the mountain.

John Cossaboom, Winter Sports Director, says the cold weather and their snow machines have put enough snow on the mountain to open slopes at the top. Right now he says 7 of the 9 slopes are open. He says they will work to get a bigger layer of snow on the existing slopes before trying to open more.

Cossaboom says recent winters have been too warm for the ski resort to produce enough snow to open the higher slopes.

"When we can say we're open to the top, even though they may not go to the summit, they know there's still plenty of snow below there," said Cossaboom.

Parts of the ski resort have up to 6 feet of snow on the ground. Snowtubing is expected to stay open through Easter weekend.
