GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Major roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed because of the snow and ice that's on the ground.

A spokesperson with the park says a layer of ice formed on the roadways prior to the snow falling on Wednesday morning. Now park crews are trying to get the roads clear so they can open back up.

"Solid ice underneath because we had so much rain up here today and last night," said Dana Soehn with the park. "These are pretty treacherous conditions, we still have people out in the back country, We're trying to be in contact with them and contact with their families to make sure we can get them out safely when they reach the trail heads."

Park service plans to spend Wednesday and much of Thursday trying to get Newfound Gap Road and Little River Road back open.
