TDOT warns roads could refreeze as temperatures continue to fall

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Roads that were clear this morning have the potential to refreeze as temperatures drop into the teens this afternoon, the Tennessee Department of Transportation says.

TDOT spokesman Mark Nagi says crews will continue to put salt brine on roads as snow falls to prevent refreezing, but whether a road freezes over depends on several factors, including how much snow falls overall and how much melts during the day.

Nagi says crews use 10-15 gallons of calcium chloride per ton when the temperature is 25 degrees or below and continue to monitor roadways through expected wintry weather conditions.
