UT graduation special for young mother

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- 21-year-old Anna King and her son, Grant, spent Friday morning getting ready for graduation at the University of Tennessee. King found out she was pregnant as a freshman. Now, three years later, she's graduating on-time with a human resources degree and an impressive 3.75 GPA.

"My multi-tasking skills have grown tremendously. I mean, you have to know, 'Okay he's napping, I've got to sit down and just focus for the next two hours solid,'" said King.

King said her family watched Grant while she was in class and credits her strong support system with her success.

"They made it clear this is your responsibility, they weren't going to do it for me, but they were going to help me as much as they could and they really have. I could not have done it without my family or without his dad and his dad's family," said King.

Seeing her walk across the stage meant a lot to her parents:

"I'm very proud of Anna - she's always been a very motivated young lady and she's just amazed us at how she's done all of this," said her mom, Marcia King.

"I'm mean, it's been four years of really hard work for her and I'm very proud of her," said Russ King, her father.

All of her hard work is paying off:

"I have a couple of interviews coming up in the following week just in human resources with a little bit of marketing as well focusing on my collateral," said King.

She said Grant it the biggest blessing of her life and said in the future, she'd like to help other young moms by volunteering or getting a masters degree in counseling.
