Maryville Closes Season With Decisive Win

MARYVILLE (WVLT) -- An eight yard scamper by sophomore Rommel Hightower for a touchdown capped a stellar season for the running back from Lenior City as he eclipsed the 1,000 yard plateau and allowed Maryville College to capture their seventh win of the season with a 43-6 triumph over Averett University on Saturday afternoon.

Hightower finished the game with 150 yards rushing and established a new career touchdown mark with his pair of scores on the day. His 1,016 yards this season ranks as the second best individual season for a back in MC football history.

The Scots used the scoreboard early and often during the USA South contest. In their second possession, MC used an eight play, 57 yard drive that took only 3:19 to score. Quarterback Lucas Wall hit Tyler Sauceman from 17 yards out to end the drive. Brad Daniell added the extra point and Maryville led 7-0.

MC tallied a 41 yard drive in their next possession. Hightower finished the offensive march with a three-yard scoring plunge. Daniell’s kick put MC up 14-0.

At the end of the first quarter Maryville was up by a pair of touchdowns and driving towards another score.

The Cougars stopped the Scots and forced Daniell to connect from 42 yards out. His field goal was good and Maryville led 17-0 early in the second quarter.

Six consecutive punts ended the half, as Maryville went to the intermission with a 17-point advantage.

Maryville took advantage of poor snap that sailed over the head of punter Michael Moore. The Scots took over possession on the Averett 18 yards line and used only a pair of plays for a quick scoring strike. Wall hit senior wide receiver Joseph Bryant from 23 yards away and kicker Doug Carter hit the conversion. The Scots’ lead had extended to 24-0.

The stellar Scots defense forced another punt and Maryville marched down the field for Hightower’s record setting score. His eight yard touchdown that finished a seven play drive was his 11th of the season. Carter’s kick was wide right, but MC still led 30-0 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth play of the last quarter saw Cory Boatman step in front of a Shane Fairbanks pass and take the interception 65 yards for a touchdown. Carter’s conversion was good and MC led 37-0.

Averett avoided a shutout on their next possession when Fairbanks took his Cougars 68 yards on seven plays that finished with a 30 yard touchdown pass to Hammond. MC’s Calvin Taylor blocked his second kick of the day and the score stood at 37-6.

With 5:18 remaining, Gary Hughes dashed 11 yards for his second touchdown of the season. The game would end with the final of 43-6.

Maryville’s defense held the Cougars to a total of 22 yards rushing on the day. Dustin Locke and Scott Stevens paced MC’s defense with eight tackles each.

The Scots used a 445 yard offensive attack to stop Averett. Rommel Hightower had 150 yards on 26 attempts. Nick Moore had 69 yards on only 10 carries.

Maryville finishes the season with a 7-3 record. The seven wins is the greatest total victories in a season since the 1999 campaign, the same season Armond Akiboh ran for 1,069 yards.
