No. 7 Tennessee shoots 60 percent, shreds Div. II opponent

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tyler Smith scored 15 points and JaJuan Smith added 14 to help No. 7 Tennessee beat Arkansas-Monticello 101-44 on Wednesday night in the first round of the StubHub Legends Classic.

Tennessee used a 20-5 run to start the game and put it out of reach. The Vols (2-0), who reached the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament last season, beat Temple in the home opener last Friday.

The Vols are now 17-0 in non-conference home games under Bruce Pearl and improved to 31-4 under the third-year coach when scoring more than 80 points.

Deron Brown led the Division II Boll Weevils with 11 points and five assists before fouling out.

The Volunteers shot 60 percent from the floor while holding Arkansas-Monticello to 25 percent.

The learning process continued for Arkansas-Monticello, which played the last of two exhibition games before it will open its regular season against West Virginia on Nov. 16. The team returned only one starter and 3.3 points per game from last season's 9-17 squad. The Boll Weevils dressed only 10 players for the game.

Tennessee won again without a major contribution from preseason All-American Chris Lofton. After averaging almost 21 points last season, the defending Southeastern Conference player of the year has only 15 points in two games on 3-of-15 shooting.
