CalTech Does The Mathematically Improbable: Wins A Game

Pasadena, Calif. (AP) -- One long losing streak is over, but the basketball players at CalTech have an even longer one to erase.

The brainy Beavers beat Bard College of New York 81-to-52 Saturday night to end a mathematically improbable run of 207 consecutive losses in NCAA Division-Three.

It was their first NCAA win since 1996. It was CalTech's first victory in 60 games overall, including non-NCAA opponents.

The school has a string of 245 conference defeats dating back almost 22 years.

Coach Roy Dow says his players are "euphoric." CalTech is renowned for its programs in science and math, and for being lovable losers in its athletic programs.
