Tennessee Men's Golf Coach Gets A Top Nod In The SEC

Tennessee men's golf head coach Jim Kelson was named the 2007 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year as the league awards were announced today.

Kelson was voted SEC coach by his peers just one week after he led the Volunteer squad to its third SEC championship in school history, and first during his tenure as coach. The team's previous best finish under Kelson was fourth place.

"Obviously I am honored and humbled by the selection," head coach Jim Kelson said. "However, I first and foremost give that credit to our players and their efforts. I also need to give the credit to our staff as I believe we have the finest assistant and volunteer assistant coaches in the country. Their efforts have been remarkable."

During the 2006-07 season, Kelson has coached the Vols to nine top-10 finishes and a No. 15 national ranking according to Golfweek. He becomes the first Volunteer head coach to earn Coach of the Year honors since Mike Malarkey in 1990.

Since joining the Volunteer coaching staff in 1998, Kelson has guided Tennessee to more than 10 Tournament Championships, and had four players finish in the top-20 during the SEC Championships.

Junior Philip Pettitt was named First Team All-SEC. Pettitt finished the regular season with a team-leading 72.60 scoring average and four top-10 finishes. His best finish came at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges, Oct. 22-24, where he fired a 73-69-72--214 to finish tied for second and lead his team to the championship.

England natives Charlie Ford and Chris Paisley were named Second Team All-SEC. Ford collected three top-10 finishes during the 2006-07 season, his most recent being an eighth-place finish at the SEC championships. Paisley played a critical role in the Vols victory at the SEC Championship; his final round 1-under-par 69 led him to a tie for second place with teammate Tino Weiss. Paisley garnered two other top-10 finishes on the season.

"We are very proud of our three players that were named to these prestigious all-conference teams," Kelson said. "All three players have worked extremely hard this year and it was very nice to see their efforts rewarded with all-conference selections. "
