Smokies Fall To Lookouts 5-2

August 26, 2007

Sevierville, TN – The North Division of the Southern League is still up for grabs with eight games remaining in the season, and the Tennessee Smokies continue to be in the chase despite a disheartening 5-2 loss at Smokies Park tonight. The Chattanooga Lookouts benefited from two home runs from Adam Rosales to power past the Smokies and into a tie for second place in the North Division.

For the second consecutive game, Chattanooga jumped out to an early lead by scoring a run in the first inning. Rosales crushed his first home run of the game to deep center field to give the Lookouts a 1-0 lead. The Lookouts extended their lead in the third inning, plating two more runs thanks largely in part to an RBI double by former Smokie Caonabo Cosme off of starting pitcher Mark Holliman (10-11).

The Smokies struck back in the bottom half of the fourth inning to get into the game. With Jemel Spearman on second and Issmael Salas on first, Robinson Chirinos slapped an RBI single to left field to pull Tennessee to within 3-1. Sam Fuld then ripped an RBI single of his own to score Salas, and the Smokies were down by a score of 3-2.
Unfortunately, the Smokies would draw no closer in this contest, as Chattanooga benefited from solid pitching from starter Carlos Fisher (5-9), as well as their bullpen who pitched four innings of scoreless work. Rosales smashed his second home run of the night in the seventh inning, his 12th of the season, to give Chattanooga a 5-2 advantage.

Tennessee mounted a late comeback charge however, as they have in several games at Smokies Park this year. With Josh Roenicke on to pitch for Chattanooga in the ninth, pinch hitter Gary Cates drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single off the bat of Casey McGehee. With one out, Spearman walked the bases loaded to put the winning run at the plate in Salas. But Salas grounded into a 1-2-3 double play on a comebacker to the pitcher to end the game. Roenicke notched his seventh save of the season in pitching the scoreless ninth.

The Smokies play game three of the five game series with Chattanooga on Monday night beginning at 7:15 pm. Tennessee will send left-hander Donnie Veal (6-10, 5.26) to the mound to face Chattanooga right-hander Sam LeCure (7-4, 4.00).
