JEFFERSON CITY (WVLT) - Appalachian State wasn't the only college football team to beat a team from a larger classification last weekend.
The Division-II Carson-Newman Eagles visited I-AA Chattanooga last Thursday and came away victors, 29-17, thanks to efforts that earned two Eagles players conference player-of-the-week honors.
Sophomore quarterback Alex Good was named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week thanks to 105 passing yards, 56 yards on the ground, and 2 touchdowns, one passing and one rushing.
Senior linebacker Eric Rice won the Defensive Player of the Week award with his momentum-altering interception return to the Chattanooga eight-yard-line.
The Eagles (2-0) rose four spots to ninth in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll. They climbed seven positions to 15th in the D2Football.com poll.
Chattanooga jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first half, but Carson-Newman piled 22 points on the Mocs before Chattanooga cut the lead to 22-17. An Alex Good 8-yard touchdown run sealed the Eagle upset.
Carson-Newman's next game is Sept. 15 at home against St. Augustine (0-1).
