Hamilton says there's a 'verbal agreement' for Vols-Trojans game

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- With no place to accommodate Southern Cal on the 2011 football schedule, Tennessee has turned down an opportunity to play the Trojans in the 2011 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

UT athletic director Mike Hamilton told Sports Overtime Wednesday afternoon that, on more than one occasion, he has been approached by Chick-fil-A Bowl president and CEO Gary Stokan about a Vols-Trojans match-up. The subject was recently brought up in June during the SEC's spring meetings in Destin, Florida.

Hamilton did tell WVLT that future schedules allow for a Tennessee-Southern Cal game, saying there has been a "verbal agreement" between the two schools to play in 2021 and 2022. Hamilton said he has asked for a signed contract to play the game, but has yet to receive one.

Tennessee's AD said the verbal agreement was in place before (now USC head coach) Lane Kiffin ever arrived in Knoxville to coach the Vols.

ESPN's Bruce Feldman first reported the news about a potential Tennessee-Southern Cal game in 2011. To read that article, click on the link below.
