Countdown to Kickoff: Wartburg

WARTBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) - Wartburg head coach Toney Brawner describes 2012 as a 'whirlwind."

It's hard to blame him. After all, he was named Wartburg's head coach just five weeks before the season started.

Despite being thrown into the fire, Wartburg still had a shot at making the playoffs, but fell short with a 4-6 record.

A year later, things have slowed down for the now second-year head coach.

"I think the coaching staff having time to work together for a whole year gives you an opportunity to not make the mistakes that I made last year," Brawner said.

The Bulldogs lost a handful of games that Brawner said they could have won. He blames the losses, in part, to his inexperience as a head coach.

Brawner only has five returning starters from last year's squad, but he feels his squad is capable of reaching the playoffs.

"I love the attitude this team has. I think that these guys can step up. They might surprise some people."

Linebacker Adam Kilby says he and his teammates have put their trust in Brawney and his football philosophy.

"I think everyone is buying into the program," Kilby said.

"(We're) trusting what Coach Brawner is doing with us. And I think that's the big thing."

Wartburg opens up the season August 30 against Rockwood.
