Dandridge native wins News Sentinel Open

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Jefferson County native Peter Malnati won the News Sentinel Open at Farragut's Fox Den Country Club after shooting 16-under par.

A Dandridge native, Malnati was on Jefferson County High School's 2004 state championship golf team.

Getting his first win on the Web.com Tour only an hour away from his hometown with all his friends and family watching made it more special for Malnati. "Any win feels good. So you take that and magnify it 10 times and you get this," Malnati said.

Malnati edged out four golfers by one stroke. He did so with a blistering 5 birdies on the last 7 holes including 18, which he played very methodically. "I knew from the moment I walked up to that tee box that I was going to hit 2 shots to try and give myself a sand wedge into this green. And I did that. And once I did that, I knew what to do from there," Malnati commented.

The News Sentinel Open was just his seventh Web.com Tour event of the season. He pockets $99,000 for winning the tournament. His winnings this year are now $155,917.
