Gibson homers as Team USA tops Canada again, 7-4

SURREY, Canada - Raven Chavanne went 3-for-4 with one RBI and Lauren Gibson homered as Team USA defeated Canada, 7-4, on Saturday in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship.

After Canada led 1-0 through the first three and a half innings, the Americans pulled ahead with a three-run fourth. Canada pulled back in front, 4-3, with a three-run fifth, but Team USA responded with one run in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Team USA will next face Japan at 9:30 p.m. ET tonight. The winner of that game advances to the championship game, which will be played at 10:30 p.m. ET on Monday.

Sarah Nevins earned the win for the Red, White and Blue, striking out eight over 5.1 frames with three earned runs allowed. Jessica Moore threw 1.2 innings in relief with two strikeouts and one earned run allowed.

Sara Plourde took the loss for Canada after allowing three earned runs over two relief frames. Jenna Caira started the game and allowed four earned runs over the first four innings.

Jen Yee hit a two-out solo homer off Nevins in the first inning to give Canada the early lead.

Gibson got Team USA on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. The former Lady Vol led off the inning with a solo blast off a 3-1 pitch from Caira to even the game a 1-1. Five batters later, Taylor Thorn clubbed a two-RBI, two-out double that plated Amanda Chidester and Valerie Arioto and gave Team USA a 3-1 lead.

Canada re-took the lead in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Victoria Hayward knocked a two-RBI double, plating Natalie Wideman and Erika Polidori. Yee brought her home in the next at-bat with an RBI single.
Michelle Moultrie led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to tie the game at 4-4.

Team USA used one more offensive surge in the bottom of the sixth to take control of the game. Thorn hit an RBI single with one out to score Rhea Taylor. After stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball, Thorn scored on a wild pitch. With two outs and Moultrie on second, Chavanne hit an RBI single to extend Team USA's lead to 7-4.
