Nighthawks add former Vol Westmoreland to the staff

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Nighthawks release) – Head coach Cosmo DeMatteo has added a pair of assistants to his staff as the Knoxville Nighthawks head into the 2013 Professional Indoor Football League season.

Former Tennessee and NFL linebacker Eric Westmoreland will serve as linebacker coach and veteran strength coach Clint Spencer will oversee both the offensive and defensive lines.

“I am very pleased Eric and Clint decided to join our staff,” DeMatteo said. “They have a tremendous amount of experience between them.”

Westmoreland, a Jasper, Tenn., native, was a standout linebacker at Tennessee and a member of the 1998 national championship squad. He was a third-round pick in the 2001 NFL draft by Jacksonville and spent three seasons with the Jaguars. He played for the Cleveland Browns in '04 and finished his career with 78 tackles, two sacks and an interception. He currently coaches linebackers at Baylor School in Chattanooga.

Spencer has been an Olympic and pro level speed and strength coach for nearly two decades. The Winchester, Tenn., native has also worked as a professional scout in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League and is currently the co-owner of Frontline Scouting Football. He also coached at Tennessee Tech, Southern Nazarene and McMinn County High School.
